In Memoriam: Kenneth Singleton
On July 30, 2026, Dr. Kenneth Singleton, Denver Brass Conductor Emeritus, passed away peacefully after extended illness. Ken was a monumental figure in the Colorado music community, and was a critical piece of the development of the Denver Brass’ sound in its early years. Not only did he conduct the ensemble for many years, but Ken arranged over 130 works for the Denver Brass. His arrangements can be heard on nearly every Denver Brass album.

“The Denver Brass, and the wider musical world, has lost a true champion of artistry, innovation, and inspiration. Dr. Kenneth Singleton joined the Denver Brass family in the fall of 1989 as Principal Conductor and Music Director, offering visionary leadership that transformed a young ensemble into a fully professional organization of international distinction. Ken imagined new horizons for brass performance and possessed a rare gift for brass arrangements and transcriptions. His creative spirit propelled Denver Brass to the forefront of developing new works for brass alone as well as groundbreaking collaborations with unexpected musical partners. Once performed by Denver Brass, Ken’s transcriptions—such as Shostakovich’s Concertino, Op. 94—quickly gained worldwide attention, prompting audiences and musicians alike to recognize the extraordinary expressive power of pure brass.
“When Denver Brass boldly embraced partnerships with bagpipes and other unconventional instrumental families, Ken encouraged the ensemble to explore these new sonic landscapes with curiosity and courage. The result was electrifying: performances that captivated listeners of every background and age, expanding what brass music could be. Ken will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Yet his generous spirit, his artistry, and his legacy live on—in the treasure trove of music he created and in the ensemble he helped shape from its earliest days: The Denver Brass.”
