From Stage to Legacy: Recording "Sketches of Courage"

Forging Sound into Legacy: Recording Sketches of Courage

There are moments in an ensemble’s life when everything converges—mission, artistry, history, and vision. For Denver Brass, recording Sketches of Courage is one of those moments.

This new album is more than a collection of pieces. It’s a statement of who we are: an American brass ensemble rooted in storytelling, shaped by 45 years of innovation, and committed to pushing our art form forward. At its core is Sketches of Courage by Sean Schafer Hennessy—a work that captures the human cost, sacrifice, and resilience woven into our shared history.

Inside the Recording Process

Recording an album like this is both an artistic and athletic endeavor. Every note must carry intention. Every phrase must be sculpted with clarity and emotional truth.

Unlike a live concert, where energy flows in a single arc, the recording studio demands precision and patience. We record in layers—capturing full takes, then refining passages through targeted sessions. Balance, blend, articulation, and color are examined under a microscope. It’s meticulous work, but it’s where great performances become lasting ones.

To bring this project to life at the highest level, we are honored to collaborate with seven-time Grammy-winning producer Elaine Martone. Elaine’s artistry behind the glass is transformative—she doesn’t just capture sound; she shapes it. Her ability to draw out nuance, depth, and narrative ensures that every moment of this album resonates with authenticity and power.

The Sound of American Storytelling

This album is centered on a distinctly American voice—bold, expansive, and deeply human. It’s patriotism, yes—but not confined to marches or nostalgia. This is a broader, more nuanced expression of what it means to reflect on our past and imagine our future.

The repertoire reflects that vision:

  • Sketches of Courage – Sean Schafer Hennessy

  • Known but to God – Sean Schafer Hennessy

  • Overture for a New Day – Andrew Wolfe

  • Fanfare for the Common Man – Aaron Copland

  • Fanfare for the Brave – Andrew Wolfe

  • They Gave All – Andrew Wolfe

Together, these works form a narrative arc—honoring sacrifice, celebrating resilience, and pointing toward hope.

What Comes Next

This recording is just the beginning.

Our vision for Sketches of Courage is ambitious and far-reaching:

  • Aiming for the highest level of recognition, including a Grammy nomination—because we believe this music, and this story, deserves to be heard on the world stage.

  • Taking the project to Europe, tracing historical pathways and sharing this music in places where its themes carry profound meaning.

  • Expanding the work symphonically, in collaboration with the Colorado Symphony—reimagining Sketches of Courage with full orchestral forces to deepen its emotional and sonic impact.

  • Introducing a powerful narrative voice, with a special guest narrator whose identity will be revealed soon.

Each of these steps is part of a larger goal: to elevate this work beyond a single performance or recording and into a lasting cultural contribution.

Why It Matters

At Denver Brass, we believe music has the power to connect us— to history, to each other, and to something larger than ourselves.

Sketches of Courage embodies that belief. It honors those who came before us while inviting new audiences into a deeper, more meaningful experience of American music. It reflects a patriotism that is thoughtful, expansive, and grounded in humanity.

This album is being forged by time: shaped by decades of artistry, collaboration, and commitment to excellence. And with your support, it will carry that legacy forward for generations to come.

Stay tuned. The story is just beginning.
