Program Peek: "From Darkness to Light: A Hanukkah Story"

We’re honored to present the world premiere of our latest work from trumpeter Sean Schafer Hennessy, commissioned to celebrate the spirit of Hanukkah.

“My piece is about the idea of light in darkness, remembering that even in the darkest moments, light still prevails and can be seen through all, waiting to guide us.

“For me, that is the central message of Hanukkah, and it feels especially important this time of year. As the days grow shorter and the world can feel heavy, Hanukkah reminds us that even a small light, when protected and tended, has the power to endure and grow.

“My goal with this piece is to follow the story of Hanukkah through both narration and music. Each movement reflects a different emotional and historical moment, from anticipation and resilience to the miracle that lasted 8 nights and the reflection of that, allowing the music to carry the narrative alongside the spoken word.

“In writing this piece, I wanted the music to feel intimate and human, emphasizing warmth, reflection, and ultimately hope. Rather than depicting triumph through sheer force, the score focuses on persistence, the quiet strength of light that refuses to be extinguished.

“For so many of us in Denver Brass, this group is not just an honor, but a refuge, a place where we can share our innermost thoughts and face our own struggles through music together. I know I can speak for all of us when I say, we are deeply thankful for everyone who makes us possible. You know who you are. Thanks for seeing our light and helping us shine together.” - Sean Schafer Hennessy
