While on a 24 hour docking in NYC, three sailors experience the charming buzz of NYC in the height of WWII. Love, lonesomeness, jazz swing, Central Park - this piece showcases a few of their highlights throughout their bold adventures.
Scene 1 - The great Lover
Do you believe in love at first sight?
This sailor will tell you he sure does. This scene follows one of the sailors, Gabey, into his vivid daydream. After seeing a poster of an ever so beautiful Ivy Smith in the underground subway, his head is sent swirling with hearts. Diving into his day dream we witness his imagination run wild as he envisions a life with the beautiful woman. Casting himself as the main role of her suitor, we are transported to envisioning a classic love story, with feet sweeping accompaniment and lush orchestration.
Surrounded, yet still alone.
While the two other sailors are busy on their way exploring the city, Gabey, caught up in his vivid imagination, is seemingly left behind all alone with only his thoughts. As he wanders the city searching for the lovely girl on the poster in his daydream craze, he is met with conflicting and hollow feelings. Although there are seemingly millions of people surrounding him, he still years for human love, connection, and understanding.
Scene 3- Times Square, 1944
Bustling city life.
The three sailors join together with their shipmates to enjoy a night out on the town. Melodies soar as jazz themes reoccur, with a quicker pacing reflecting the fast pace of the city life. This movement is guaranteed to make you want to dance!
