Get out the beads and costumes and strike up the band for Bourbon Street Brass! This concert has been a fan favorite for many years, and this year we are jazzed up to bring Al Hood front and center as our guest jazz trumpet soloist.
The Denver Brass, long known to expertly present music of all genres and styles since its inception in 1981, has relied for over 18 years on Al Hood to hold down the "jazz improv" chair for the ensemble. Usually, Al stands for occasional solos in jazz tunes but for this concert, Al will come center-stage and wail away at great Bourbon Street tunes including Saints Go Marching, It Ain't Necessarily So, Sweet Georgia Brown, Someone to Watch Over Me, Tiger Rag and Sing, Sing, Sing!
Al will also join the Denver Brass5 quintet on two pieces including Prayer for Bruno, which was composed for the Aries Brass Quintet by Art Lande and features the mournful sounds of gospel jazz trumpet. The second quintet piece is the second movement of Rhapsody for Jazz Trumpet by Les Stallings, composed exclusively for Alan Hood. It is titled "Wonder of Kyrie" - Kyrie being Al's daughter, who was a very young child at the time of the writing. It is a beautiful lullaby, meant to be played rather than sung, for his precious little one.
Alan is one of today's most prominent trumpet educators and performers, having recorded over 50 CDs and serving as trumpet professor at the Lamont School of Music for the past 18 years. He is one of the rare trumpeters who feels equally at home in both classical and jazz performance. Alan has been prominently recognized in the jazz field, and in the Denver Brass his talents are evident in all styles of music.
Alan is one of the most respected authorities on the late, great trumpeter, Clifford Brown, and even started the "Clifford Brown Jazz Trumpet Consortium" in 2015. While Alan has recorded extensively over his career and played with some of the world's greatest trumpeters, his first solo CD release, Just a Little Taste, is where he found his own voice in the world of trumpet virtuosos.
After all this time as a section player with the Denver Brass, it is fitting and awesome to headline this incredible talent on one of our Season Series concerts. Tickets can be purchased at www.newmantix.com/denverbrass or by calling 303-832-HORN (4676).
